Hobart night life – live venues

Live music venue Hobart Tasmania

Every now and then I like to remind myself the days when I was young.

I’d go out and see live bands until all hours of the night.

These days it takes something special for me to stay out late to see a band. I am not talking about the seemingly endless stream of “tribute” acts playing at the casino. I’m talking about someone special and real playing at a grungy local venue.

I’m not that old but I am not young enough to be able to tell you the cool venues in Tasmania. I can tell you one area of Hobart to visit and offer some advice on how to experience it.

One of the great things with Tasmania in general is that getting to “something” and parking is always easy. You can just about always park right near where you want to be and, if you can’t, you are only ever a short walk from the furthest parking space.

When I am visiting North Hobart I factor its popularity in and park a couple of blocks away at most and then walk down/up the main strip taking in the sights and smells.

North Hobart is well known for its eateries. There’s lots of them and a wide variety. So factor a meal into your gig night. Don’t book. Show up and wander into whatever place takes your fancy.

There are pubs and intimate bars along the strip. They offer all sorts of entertainment. Many morph from one thing to another on a regular basis. Comedy club one night, jazz bar the next , local pub by day, rock venue by night.

If you are a night owl venues like The Republic Bar  run late with bands every night of the week. When I was there last things kicked off at 10pm and ran until after 1am.

As we spilled onto the street after the show North Hobart still seemed to be at least partially alive. We walked back to the car past other venues with shows still going. It was hard for me to take it all in. It was well past my bedtime.

(By the way, North Hobart is also home to the State Theatre which is a lovely place to see an arty film on a Sunday afternoon).
